The geopolitical position of Crete and its strategic role as a bridge for scientific and business cooperation between Europe and Africa are being confirmed in the most dynamic way. The Hellenic Mediterranean University (HMU) is taking the lead in international outreach by hosting the 3rd International African Week<\/strong>, from 18 to 22 May 2026. This high\u2011level summit, held at the Amphitheatre of the School of Management and Economics in Heraklion, is not merely an academic event\u2014it is a first\u2011class investment and development platform for the wider Mediterranean region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the central theme \u201cInnovation Under Constraints: How Lab to Market Succeeds (and Fails) in the Global South,\u201d<\/strong> this year\u2019s edition touches the core of the modern knowledge economy: how primary research can break through the walls of the laboratory and transform into marketable products, generating added value for both industry and society. In a global environment where resources are limited, the ability of universities to produce applied innovation has become the new currency of regional development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

HMU\u2019s initiative is not an isolated effort but part of a long\u2011term strategy launched in 2024. From the early discussions on internationalisation, food security and precision agriculture, to the 2025 focus on the Sustainable Development Goals, the Cretan institution has succeeded in building a strong brand in the field of international cooperation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year, the emphasis shifts to practice and entrepreneurship, examining the challenges faced by researchers in the Global South as well as in Mediterranean economies that share similar constraints in infrastructure and funding tools. Crete, functioning as a living lab<\/strong>, offers the ideal institutional and geographical framework for the development of these strategic synergies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Approximately 25 distinguished speakers<\/strong> from nine countries across Africa and the Middle East\u2014including Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania, Tunisia, Egypt, Uganda, Palestine and Jordan\u2014are expected to gather in Heraklion. Their interaction with the academic and business community of Crete creates fertile ground for new commercial and research partnerships, strengthening the island\u2019s profile as a regional innovation leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The themes that will dominate the five\u2011day programme reflect the trends shaping the future of the global market. Discussions will focus on alternative financing models and the development of resilient innovation ecosystems in low\u2011resource environments\u2014areas in which Africa has shown explosive growth in recent years through technology and start\u2011ups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of particular interest to Crete\u2019s economy are the sessions on precision agriculture, sustainable primary production and the direct transfer of know\u2011how to the agricultural sector. Linking research with production is the only way to safeguard local products against climate change and international competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In parallel, the programme will explore issues of engineering, energy and resilient construction solutions, as well as the critical role of academic libraries and educational accessibility as catalysts for the social impact of science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 3rd International African Week<\/strong> is not addressed to a closed circle of experts; attendance is open to the general public, professionals and productive sectors of Crete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
