Development‑Driven Preservation of Historical Heritage

The enhancement of the cultural assets of South Crete is progressing rapidly, with the Municipality of Sfakia transforming its rich historical heritage into a lever for qualitative development. At the centre of the region’s business and development agenda was the recent on‑site inspection carried out by the Mayor of Sfakia, Ioannis Zervos, together with the Head of the Chania Ephorate of Antiquities, Eleni Papadopoulou, at the Venetian Fortress of Chora Sfakion.

The visit, attended by senior officials of the Ephorate of Antiquities as well as Deputy Mayors Georgios Kagiadakis and Ioannis Braoudakis, focused on assessing the progress of the restoration works. The project, with a budget of €700,000, is funded by the regional programme “Crete 2021–2027” and forms part of a broader programme agreement. This agreement—co‑signed by the Municipality of Sfakia, the Ministry of Culture, the Region of Crete and the Technical University of Crete—constitutes a legacy of the municipal administration’s planning during the 2015–2019 period, demonstrating the institutional continuity required for major infrastructure projects.

Mapping Cultural Investments

Following the inspection of the fortification monument, the two sides continued discussions at the Sfakia Town Hall, reviewing additional mature studies concerning cultural sites within the municipality’s administrative boundaries.

A key topic of the technical meeting was the implementation progress and staffing of the restoration project of the Byzantine Church of Panagia in Agia Roumeli. This intervention, with a budget of €350,000, has already secured funding through Decision No. 5146/24‑10‑2025 of the Region of Crete, falling under the same rigorous programme framework. With this addition, the total value of ongoing cultural investments in the area reaches €1.05 million.

Identity and Quality Tourism

The Municipality of Sfakia and the archaeological authorities maintain a channel of continuous communication and close cooperation, aiming to meet timelines and ensure the high quality of all interventions. The strategic choice of the municipal administration does not focus on short‑term tourist exploitation but on creating a sustainable economic model for the local community.

As Mayor Ioannis Zervos emphasised, the protection and promotion of the Byzantine monument of Panagia in Agia Roumeli is a priority for preserving the region’s cultural identity. He made clear that, for the current municipal authority, showcasing history is not a superficial tourist attraction or a showcase project, but a duty to historical memory. The goal remains to attract visitors of high qualitative profile through a form of cultural tourism that respects both the environment and the local community—affirming the principle that the people of Sfakia design their future while keeping their roots deeply anchored in their history.
