The meeting held on the morning of Wednesday, May 13, 2026, at the offices of the Decentralized Administration of Crete, between the Vice-President of the Government, Kostis Hatzidakis, and the Secretary, Maria Koziraki, marks a critical turning point for the island’s operational planning. The focus of the discussion was the necessity of a modernized administrative model, which will allow for a more effective response of state services to the demands of local communities, based on improved coordination and the removal of bureaucratic bottlenecks.
The major issue that dominated the agenda was the sustainable management of water resources, a matter with a direct impact on the economic and environmental stability of Crete. Particular emphasis was placed on the institutional initiative for the creation of a Water Council, a body that aims to become the central pillar for strategic planning and the unification of the actions of all involved agencies. The role of the Decentralized Administration is considered pivotal in this effort, as it is called upon to ensure the coherence of infrastructure and the rational distribution of resources.
