A Pillar of Quality Journalism

With strong participation from representatives of the media, government, academia and the wider communication and advertising ecosystem, the central conference of the multi‑thematic event “Media & Magazine Days 2026” was held at the emblematic former Tobacco Factory of the Hellenic Parliament. The Union of Journalists–Owners of Periodical Press (EDIPT) showcased, through a comprehensive institutional presence, its role as a pillar of credibility and a defender of quality journalism at a time when the public sphere is increasingly challenged by information overload and misinformation.

Opening the proceedings, EDIPT President Penny Kalyva outlined the framework of the initiative: an event that brings together an exhibition, workshops and educational activities under a common purpose — highlighting the value of quality journalism and reading culture. She emphasized the enduring importance of print media and signed journalism, at a moment when the need for reliable information is more critical than ever.

In the State’s official greetings, Deputy Minister to the Prime Minister and Government Spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis referred to the government’s initiatives to support the media and to the essential role of journalism in combating misinformation. Deputy Minister of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports Kostas Vlasis underscored the importance of reading and critical thinking, while the Regional Governor of Attica, Nikos Hardalias, conveyed his support through a recorded video message.

A key moment of the conference was the presentation of the new nationwide readership survey for the magazine and periodical press by Performance & Leadership Strategy Consultant Xenia Kourtoglou. The findings reaffirmed that print media remain a benchmark of credibility, trust and evidence‑based reporting — in stark contrast to the often noisy and unstable environment of digital information.

The event’s three thematic panels highlighted the Union’s institutional role and its contribution to shaping public dialogue. The first panel focused on journalistic ethics and the contemporary challenges facing the media, featuring leading institutional representatives of the sector. The second examined the importance of trust in communication, advertising and business, stressing that media credibility is a decisive factor in addressing misinformation. The third panel explored the evolution of print content and design over time, as well as the enduring role of regional newspapers and specialized magazines, confirming that print media remain vibrant and irreplaceable.

As part of the event, a Media Workshop titled “Artificial Intelligence in Media and Journalism” was held, attracting strong interest and highlighting the technological challenges and opportunities shaping the future of the sector.

“Media & Magazine Days 2026” is held under the auspices of major institutions and with the support of the Hellenic Parliament, underscoring the event’s institutional character and the recognition of EDIPT’s work. At the same venue, the exhibition “The Periodical Press Through Time” showcased the Union’s 87‑year history and the contribution of its member publications to Greek journalism and public life, through rare archival material from the Library of the Hellenic Parliament and EDIPT’s own historical archive.
The conference made clear that, despite the challenges, print media remain a cornerstone of democratic information. With institutional consistency and a contemporary outlook, the Union continues to defend quality, credibility and the essential role of journalism at a time when the need for accurate information is more vital than ever.
