Scientists Ioanna Atsalaki and Georgios S. Atsalakis, from the School of Production Engineering and Management at the Technical University of Crete, present a new scientific study examining the resilience of global supply chains under high‑intensity geopolitical crises. Their work has been published in the international scientific journal Supply Chain Analytics (Elsevier), which holds a high Impact Factor of 9.1, confirming the international recognition and significance of the research.

Their work, titled “A Fuzzy Prescriptive Analytics Framework for Supply Chain Resilience under Geopolitical Disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz”, introduces an integrated prescriptive analytics model that combines Artificial Intelligence, fuzzy logic, expert knowledge and mathematical optimization. This approach enables the transformation of qualitative geopolitical risk assessments into concrete operational decisions, offering a transparent and reproducible methodology for supply chain strategists.Using the Strait of Hormuz—one of the world’s most critical energy corridors—as a real‑world application, the study demonstrates how geopolitical shocks can cascade across transportation networks, energy systems, fertilizer supply chains and food distribution. The findings show that as disruption intensity increases, strategic responses such as supplier diversification, strategic stockpiling, alternative transport routes and emergency procurement can be activated to maintain supply continuity.

The study provides decision‑makers with a scientifically grounded and operationally practical tool to safeguard business continuity when facing disruptions in global trade routes. It also contributes to the development of new AI‑driven decision‑support systems that enhance supply chain resilience in a rapidly evolving geopolitical landscape.

The work of the two scientists strengthens the international presence of the Technical University of Crete in the field of supply chain analytics and adds valuable insight to the global discussion on preparing businesses for geopolitical volatility.
