Crete–Venice: A Cross‑Mediterranean Research Alliance

The long standing cultural and architectural ties between Crete and Venice are entering a new phase of international visibility through a major research collaboration between the Laboratory of Documentation and Restoration of Historic Buildings at the Technical University of Crete, Ca’ Foscari University of Venice and the Municipality of Venice. This partnership, grounded in scientific documentation and historical analysis, brings forward a significant chapter of the shared Mediterranean heritage that connects the two regions across centuries.
On Friday, 25 September 2026, an innovative digital dynamic book — the outcome of the joint research effort led by Professor Nikolaos Skoutelis of the School of Architectural Engineering at the Technical University of Crete and Professor Elisabetta Molteni of Ca’ Foscari — will be presented at the “Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa” exhibition hall in St. Mark’s Square. The venue, deeply embedded in Venice’s cultural identity, provides an ideal setting for unveiling a project that bridges archival research, architectural history and contemporary academic collaboration.
The digital volume compiles and organises the results of extensive historical and archival research on the two Venetian ports and the studies of the Arsenali (Neoria) of Chania and Heraklion. The work was carried out within the framework of the Veneto Region’s funding programme for 2024–2026, enabling the research team to access and analyse a wide range of historical documents, architectural records and archival materials. Through this process, the project offers a comprehensive understanding of the evolution of the ports and the Neoria, while highlighting the enduring historical relationship between Crete and Venice.
Beyond its historical significance, the research demonstrates how architectural heritage can serve as a strategic tool for cultural diplomacy and international academic engagement. The collaboration showcases the outward looking character of Greek universities and reinforces their presence within global research networks. The digital book stands as a testament to how documentation, scientific analysis and cultural memory can converge into a modern, accessible and internationally relevant academic resource.
From 25 September to 2 October 2026, the same venue will host an exhibition featuring selected material from the studies and research conducted by the Technical University of Crete team. The exhibition complements the Greek participation in the 19th Venice Architecture Biennale, offering a deeper look into the research findings and strengthening Crete’s presence within one of the world’s most influential architectural institutions.
The Crete–Venice collaboration exemplifies how academic research can evolve into a cross Mediterranean cultural initiative. It highlights the value of shared heritage, the importance of scientific documentation and the role of universities in shaping international cultural narratives. Through this partnership, the Technical University of Crete and Ca’ Foscari University reaffirm the relevance of historical architecture as a bridge between past and present and as a foundation for future academic and cultural cooperation.
