Agios Nikolaos is preparing to host one of Greece’s most distinctive sports events for the eighth consecutive year, as Cliff Diving 2026 returns to the iconic Lake Voulismeni on 19–20 September. The natural landmark at the heart of the city will once again transform into an open arena where seventeen elite athletes from Europe and North America will perform dives from heights exceeding twenty meters, creating a striking blend of athletic spectacle and urban landscape.
The event has become a signature element of Agios Nikolaos’ identity, strengthening the city’s international visibility and positioning it within the growing market of sports tourism. Over the years, Cliff Diving has evolved into a strategic asset for the region, attracting global attention and reinforcing Crete’s capacity to host highprofile international events.
The official press briefing took place on 17 September at Lake Voulismeni. Mayor Manolis Menegakis highlighted the importance of the event for the city’s extroversion and promotion, noting that Agios Nikolaos has demonstrated its ability to support demanding international sports initiatives. He emphasized that Cliff Diving forms part of a broader programme of sports and tourism activities currently underway. The Mayor also paid tribute to Natasa Pagkalou, to whom this year’s events are dedicated, acknowledging her contribution to local sports and volunteerism.
Deputy Mayor for Sports Stergios Atsalakis referred to the essential role of volunteers, rescue teams and support crews who contribute to the safe and successful execution of the event. He noted that the municipality aims to further enhance and upgrade the institution in the coming years. Athletes Jan Wilko Heinzel from Germany and Caitlyn Padgett from Canada spoke warmly about Agios Nikolaos, praising the hospitality and the unique atmosphere of Lake Voulismeni. Heinzel referred to his long-standing connection with the competition, while Padgett expressed her excitement for her first participation and the challenge of diving from twenty meters.
The event is organized by the Municipality of Agios Nikolaos and held under the auspices of the Greek National Tourism Organization, the Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports, and the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy. It is supported by the Region of Crete, the Hellenic Swimming Federation and Infinity Drop.
Cliff Diving continues to strengthen Agios Nikolaos’ international profile, offering a rare combination of natural scenery, urban accessibility and high-level athletic performance. Lake Voulismeni will once again serve as the focal point of an event that connects sport with the cultural and tourism identity of the region, delivering a unique experience to residents, visitors and the global audience.
