Sitia Showcases a New Model of Local Extroversion and Climate Resilience

The decision of the Interreg NaTour4CChange consortium to select Sitia as the host city for its final event — held on Friday at the Municipal Council Hall — highlights the region’s strategic importance in implementing forward‑looking environmental and climate policies. During the meeting, project experts presented the final outcomes related to Nature‑based Solutions (NBS), demonstrating how nature-driven interventions can strengthen resilience in coastal and island destinations.
Local stakeholders from Sitia’s hospitality and accommodation sectors actively participated in the discussion, underscoring the growing need to connect environmental protection with local economic activity and everyday business practice. Their presence reflected a shared understanding: sustainability is no longer an abstract concept but a practical requirement for destinations seeking long‑term competitiveness.
Immediately after the indoor session, the focus shifted to Sitia’s central square, where the UNESCO Global Geopark Sitia hosted a dedicated event within the framework of the 3rd Alternative Tourism Festival “GeoFest.” The event highlighted the Geopark’s unique identity, local businesses and producers participating in the Quality Agreement Scheme, and the broader cultural and geological heritage of the region.
The joint physical presence of representatives from the UNESCO Global Geopark, the NaTour4CChange consortium and the Horizon Europe Regions4Climate (R4C) project — all of whom were actively involved in both activities — symbolized a substantial alliance. This alliance demonstrated how scientific expertise, climate strategy and local authenticity can converge under a shared vision for Sitia’s future.
Together, these initiatives proved that sustainability is not a theoretical aspiration, but a living commitment expressed daily in the town’s streets, squares and community interactions. Something meaningful is changing in Sitia: the region is embracing extroversion, building international partnerships and positioning itself as a model for climate‑resilient development.
This direction was reinforced by the intervention of George Pelekanakis, President of the Hellenic Federation of Hotel Managers, who stated:
“Structured dialogue and cooperation between local authorities, tourism professionals, the community and all involved stakeholders are essential if we are to protect our natural environment while building a tourism model with long‑term prospects.
Sitia, with its exceptional natural and cultural wealth, can become a strong example of sustainable tourism development.
We continue with collaboration, open dialogue and targeted actions to build a more resilient and sustainable future.”
Sitia’s coordinated participation in Interreg NaTour4CChange, UNESCO Global Geopark initiatives and Horizon R4C marks a turning point.
