The Region of Crete Hosts High-Level Business Delegation from China: Strategic Meetings and New Investment Pathways

The Region of Crete hosted a high level Chinese business delegation on Monday, 28 September 2026, as part of an official mission organized by the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Athens. The visit, held at the Region’s new administrative headquarters, placed the spotlight on strategic sectors of cooperation and a series of targeted B2B meetings between leading Chinese corporations and key stakeholders of the Cretan economy.
Regional Governor Stavros Arnaoutakis welcomed the Ambassador of China to Greece, Fang Qiu, highlighting the long standing ties between two ancient civilizations and the strong potential for expanding cooperation across agriculture, tourism, infrastructure and energy. He emphasized the major development projects currently underway on the island — including the new international airport in Kastelli, the Northern Road Axis of Crete (BOAK) and the island’s energy interconnection — noting that Chinese investment capital is already contributing to Crete’s energy transition and environmental footprint.
The discussion also focused on cultural cooperation, following the recent inscription of the Minoan Palatial Centers on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Governor underscored that partnerships in academia, cultural institutions and infrastructure represent a strategic priority for Crete, strengthening the island’s international visibility and cultural diplomacy.
Agricultural exports were another key topic, with particular emphasis on expanding the presence of Cretan olive oil in the Chinese market. Both sides also explored opportunities for direct tourism flows between China and Crete, reflecting the growing interest of Chinese travelers in Mediterranean destinations.
Ambassador Fang Qiu praised Crete’s hospitality and referred to the long standing friendship between the two peoples, noting that the island was the first destination he visited after assuming his duties. He also expressed gratitude for Crete’s crucial role in 2011 during the safe evacuation of 14,000 Chinese citizens from Libya, underlining the depth and continuity of bilateral relations.
At 10:30, an extended meeting convened in the Regional Council chamber, bringing together mayors from across Crete, institutional representatives and business leaders. The Chinese delegation included senior executives from major corporations such as Bank of China, State Grid Corporation of China, Huawei Southeast European, ZTE Hellas Telecommunications S.A., OCEAN RAIL LOGISTICS S.A., iFLYTEK (Europe) and Chery International.
Following the plenary session, Chinese companies held dedicated B2B meetings with Cretan enterprises, exploring collaboration opportunities in energy, technology, logistics, tourism, agriculture and trade. These sessions aimed to establish concrete partnerships, accelerate investment interest and strengthen Crete’s position as a dynamic hub for international business activity.
The visit of the Chinese business delegation confirms Crete’s strategic role in the wider Mediterranean region — a place where innovation, culture, infrastructure and economic development converge. The Region of Crete continues to invest in initiatives that enhance extroversion, create new opportunities for local enterprises and reinforce the island’s standing as a reliable and forward looking partner in global economic and cultural cooperation.
