Crete Leads Greece’s Tourism Performance in 2026

Crete reaffirms its position as Greece’s strongest tourism region in 2026, recording the highest number of international air arrivals nationwide. According to INSETE Intelligence, the island welcomed 4.4 million international visitors during January–August 2026 (+6.4% year on year), with Heraklion and Chania delivering robust growth across the peak season. Crete also posted the highest volume of domestic air arrivals, reaching 998 thousand travelers (+4.8%), underscoring its resilience and sustained demand throughout the year.
Greece’s inbound tourism continued its upward trajectory in 2026, as highlighted in the September Statistical Bulletin of INSETE Intelligence. International air arrivals reached 20.6 million in the January–August period, marking an increase of +670 thousand (+3.4%) compared with 2025. The third quarter opened strongly: July registered 5.0 million arrivals (+3.2%), while August followed with 4.9 million (+2.7%), confirming solid momentum during the core summer season.
Performance varied across major airports. Athens International Airport handled 5.9 million arrivals, a slight decline of 1.4%, while Thessaloniki Airport strengthened its position with 2.0 million arrivals (+6.0%). All regional clusters recorded positive growth, led by Crete, followed by the Dodecanese with 3.4 million arrivals (+2.5%), the Ionian Islands with 3.2 million (+6.4%), and the Cyclades with 981 thousand (+4.4%).
Travel receipts also moved upward. Based on INSETE’s analysis of Bank of Greece data, revenues during January–July 2026 reached €13.518 billion, an increase of +12.0% compared with the same period in 2025. This growth was driven by both EU markets and non EU markets. Receipts from EU residents rose to €7.094 billion (+6.9%), while revenues from non EU travelers surged to €5.783 billion (+18.3%).
Within the eurozone, receipts climbed to €5.884 billion (+11.3%), whereas revenues from EU countries outside the eurozone declined to €1.210 billion ( 10.4%). Market performance was mixed: Germany posted a slight decrease ( 0.7%), France saw a sharper drop ( 16.8%), while Italy recorded a strong rise of +31.6%. Among non EU markets, the United Kingdom delivered significant growth of +23.3%, and the United States increased by +7.9%, reinforcing the importance of long haul travel for Greece’s tourism economy.
Overall, the 2026 data presented by INSETE Intelligence highlight a tourism sector that remains robust, geographically diversified and economically strong. With Crete leading arrivals and national receipts expanding at double digit rates, Greece enters the final quarter of the year with solid fundamentals and sustained international demand.
