
Tourism Diplomacy: Greece Strengthens International Partnerships with Egypt and Brazil

Greece is advancing its tourism diplomacy through two highlevel meetings held by the Minister of Tourism, Olga Kefalogianni, with the newly appointed Ambassadors of Egypt and Brazil. The discussions highlighted the strong bilateral relations, the institutional continuity between the countries, and the shared commitment to developing targeted initiatives that enhance tourism cooperation on a global scale.
During her meeting with the new Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt to Greece, Mourad Y. Mourad, the Minister reaffirmed the excellent ties of friendship and collaboration between the two nations, as well as the deep historical and cultural bonds connecting their peoples. She emphasized the high level of institutional cooperation both bilaterally and within the framework of the trilateral partnership among Greece, Cyprus and Egypt, which continues to gain momentum. The two sides explored opportunities to further develop tourism cooperation by leveraging the comparative advantages of both destinations and their rich cultural heritage.
Discussions also focused on strengthening air connectivity and promoting closer collaboration between tourism and business stakeholders in both countries. The Ambassador underlined the strategic nature of Greece–Egypt cooperation across a wide range of sectors, noting that tourism serves as an important bridge between the two societies. Both sides acknowledged the significance of their joint engagement in international organizations such as UN Tourism and UNESCO, where their long history and cultural depth provide a strong foundation for global cultural tourism initiatives. n her meeting with the new Ambassador of the Federative Republic of Brazil, Laudemar Gonçalves de Aguiar Neto, the Minister confirmed the positive trajectory of bilateral relations and the shared intention to deepen cooperation. Institutional collaboration between Greece and Brazil has been further strengthened following the signing of the Tourism Cooperation Memorandum in 2023. The Minister and the Ambassador agreed to work toward expanding joint initiatives that deliver tangible results, capitalizing on the strengths and unique characteristics of both destinations.
The Minister highlighted the close cooperation between Greece and Brazil within UN Tourism, noting that the two countries share a common vision for sustainable tourism development. She also referred to Brazil’s important role as Chair of the Organization’s Executive Council and the potential for enhanced collaboration at the international level. The discussion included the growing importance of the Brazilian market for Greece, the positive momentum in tourism flows, ongoing efforts to improve air connectivity, and opportunities to strengthen Greece’s presence in Latin America.
The Ambassador emphasized Brazil’s interest in intensifying joint actions, including initiatives supported by the UN Tourism Regional Office in Rio de Janeiro. He expressed Brazil’s willingness to exchange expertise with Greece in areas such as hospitality, tourism experience enhancement and product diversification.
The Minister also referred to the forthcoming European Strategy for Sustainable Tourism and initiatives aimed at promoting “Brand Europe” in strategically important markets, noting that Brazil is a key market for both Greece and the European Union. The two sides agreed to advance new forms of cooperation between public and private stakeholders, focusing on knowledge exchange and the development of initiatives that will further strengthen tourism relations between Greece and Brazil.
These two meetings underscore Greece’s commitment to expanding its international tourism partnerships and enhancing its global presence through targeted diplomatic engagement. The country’s strategic approach reflects a broader framework of extroversion, institutional continuity and collaborative action that reinforces competitiveness and opens new prospects for the Greek tourism sector.
