Disability in the Window
[57s read]
Accessibility, inclusion and equal participation in public space have become central priorities for modern cities and their business communities. In Heraklion, this conversation takes on a deeper and more tangible dimension through the second edition of the initiative “Disability in the Shop Window”, a project that transforms commercial storefronts into points of awareness, reflection and public dialogue.
Organized by the Heraklion Trade Association in collaboration with the nonprofit organization akako.gr and supported by the Municipality of Heraklion’s Deputy Mayor for Volunteering, the initiative will take place from 19 to 31 October across Heraklion and Gazi. Building on the strong public response of its first edition in 2025, the project aims to highlight real conditions of accessibility in the city and to strengthen visibility around the everyday challenges faced by people with disabilities.
By placing a wheelchair—either alone or accompanied by a mannequin—in participating shop windows, the initiative invites residents and visitors to reconsider how accessible the commercial and public environment truly is. The display is not intended as a symbol of pity, nor as a simulation of someone else’s life. Instead, it serves as a visual prompt that opens a conversation about barriers, inclusion and the right of every person to navigate the city safely and independently.
The first edition demonstrated that storefronts can become meaningful spaces for social communication, helping bridge the gap between everyday commercial activity and broader civic awareness. This year’s initiative continues that effort, reaffirming the role of local businesses as active contributors to a more inclusive and accessible urban landscape.
