Anniversary Day of “Kriton Filoxenein”

From the first, historic inperson event held in Chania in 2020 during the COVID pandemic, to this year’s hosting in the weatherstricken Plateau of Lasithi, “Kriton Filoxenein” marks five years of continuous presence across Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion, Agios Nikolaos and Sitia — five years in which hospitality has functioned as a value, an identity and a developmental advantage for Crete.
The 3rd of October has become a date of special significance for Crete. It marks the day when, in 2020, during one of the most challenging phases of the COVID pandemic, the first Kriton Filoxenein was held in Chania — the only inperson event that took place on the island that year, strictly adhering to all required health protocols.
That inaugural initiative, born in a period of uncertainty and social pressure, succeeded not only in highlighting the authenticity of Cretan hospitality but also in proving that Crete can create institutions even in the most difficult circumstances. Since then, the action has travelled across the island: Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion, Agios Nikolaos, Sitia — each city added a new chapter to the unified narrative of Kriton Filoxenein, connecting tradition with the contemporary entrepreneurial and social reality of Crete. Every hosting location contributed its own identity, perspective and momentum to the evolution of a now established institution.
Today, five years later, Kriton Filoxenein prepares for its 6th edition, which will take place on 24 October 2026 at the Plateau of Lasithi, hosted by the Municipality of Oropedio Lasithiou. A region that, in recent days, has been severely affected by intense weather phenomena — floods, agricultural damage and disruptions in electricity supply.
The choice of the Plateau of Lasithi is not merely geographical. It is symbolic. Kriton Filoxenein goes where Cretan hospitality is tested yet remains alive. Where communities confront the consequences of climate change but continue to support one another. Where hospitality is not only tradition — it is resilience, cohesion and a way of life.
The anniversary day of the action reminds us that Cretan hospitality is not simply a cultural heritage passed down through generations. It is a living value that evolves, inspires, unites and creates. It is a way of life that becomes an institutional initiative, a public dialogue, an educational process and a developmental tool for the entire island.
As the action enters its sixth year, Kriton Filoxenein continues to expand its reach and reaffirm that the hospitality of Crete has become a national point of reference. The 3rd of October is not just a date. It is the beginning of an institution born in a difficult era — one that continues to grow, inspire and shape the future of Cretan hospitality.
