Chania Honors Mikis Theodorakis with the 2026 Cultural Festival

September in Chania is dedicated to honoring the legacy of Mikis Theodorakis — the iconic Greek composer who chose Crete, his ancestral homeland, as his final resting place. For the 12th consecutive year, and the 5th since his passing, the Region of Crete, the Municipality of Chania and the Pancretan Association of Friends of Mikis Theodorakis present the “Mikis Theodorakis – Chania 2026” Festival, a cultural institution that preserves and projects his global artistic footprint.
Marking 100+1 years since his birth (1925–2026), this year’s festival features a multi layered program running from 31 August to 3 September, highlighting both the classical and popular dimensions of Theodorakis’ work. Concerts, readings, archival presentations and thematic events illuminate his music, his words and the intellectual depth that shaped his international influence.
The centerpiece of the festival is the Day of Remembrance, on 2 September — the date Theodorakis passed away in 2021. The day includes a formal tribute at his eternal resting place in Galatas, Chania, followed by the annual Political Memorial Ceremony, now established as a cultural landmark for the region.
Theodorakis’ decision to be buried in Chania reflects his profound connection to Crete and his identity as a Cretan. Today, local institutions and the community work collaboratively to honor that legacy. Their shared goal is to elevate the global significance of his work and transform the Theodorakis family home in Galatas into a Museum and International Center for Research and Culture — a space dedicated to study, creativity and cultural dialogue.
The envisioned center aims to become a unique reference point in global cultural heritage: a place where researchers, artists and visitors can explore the life, music and political thought of Mikis Theodorakis, ensuring that his legacy continues to inspire future generations.
