Crete Enters the Digital Euro Era through the Cooperative Bank of Chania

The Cooperative Bank of Chania has been selected by the Eurosystem to participate in the pilot development and testing phase of the digital euro, becoming one of 36 European banks and payment service providers contributing to the design of Europe’s future electronic payment ecosystem.
The selection follows an expression of interest process launched in March, during which candidates were evaluated based on strict technical, operational and organizational criteria set by the Eurosystem. The pilot program is expected to begin in the second half of 2027 and will run for twelve months. The Cooperative Bank of Chania will participate as a payment service provider, in collaboration with the Bank of Greece and in accordance with the operational framework defined by the Eurosystem.
