Crete Infrastructure Upgrade: BOAK Works Move Forward

Crete’s largest infrastructure project is advancing across its entire length, as the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport conducted a full scale inspection of the construction sites along the Northern Road Axis of Crete (BOAK). The inspection covered the regions of Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion and Agios Nikolaos, confirming substantial progress both on the new motorway and on the ongoing road safety upgrades along the existing axis.
The latest assessment highlights a clear picture: Crete is entering a new phase of transport modernization, with works that will significantly improve mobility, strengthen regional connectivity and support long term economic growth. The bypasses of Chania, Rethymno and Heraklion are progressing according to schedule and are expected to open to traffic soon, easing congestion and improving travel conditions in the island’s major urban centers.
On the eastern side of the island, construction on the Neapoli–Agios Nikolaos section has reached an advanced stage. Approximately 10 kilometers of the new motorway—between Agios Nikolaos and Neapoli—are expected to be delivered to traffic in the coming period, marking one of the first completed segments of the new BOAK.
At the same time, extensive road safety interventions are underway along 131 kilometers of the existing axis, from Kissamos to Heraklion. These works aim to reduce accidents and improve travel safety until the full motorway is completed. The interventions include resurfacing, upgraded road markings, new signage, safety barriers, improved lighting, vegetation clearing and a series of technical upgrades designed to enhance visibility and overall driving conditions.
Several sections have already been completed, including Chania–Kolymbari, Rethymno–Geropotamos and the segment between the Heraklion Landfill and Linoperamata. The remaining high risk sections—Souda–Georgioupoli, Petres–Atsipopoulo, Kissamos–Kolymbari and Geropotamos–Heraklion Landfill—are scheduled for completion by the end of August.
The BOAK project represents far more than a transport upgrade. It is a strategic investment in Crete’s future, enhancing the island’s competitiveness, reducing travel times, supporting tourism flows and enabling new economic opportunities for businesses and local communities. As construction advances across all regions, Crete is gradually evolving into a unified network of modern infrastructure—one that strengthens its role as a dynamic Mediterranean hub.
Regional representatives and local authorities attended the inspection, underscoring the project’s importance for the island’s long term development and its impact on residents, visitors and the broader economic ecosystem.
