Maritime tourism is one of Greece’s highest-value sectors, combining strong international demand with significant local economic impact. The modernization of marina infrastructure is central to the country’s strategy for a year-round, high-quality tourism model that generates broad multiplier effects for regional economies. In this context, Greece inaugurated the upgraded Agios Nikolaos Marina in Crete, a project that reflects the country’s commitment to enhancing its position in the Mediterranean’s competitive yachting landscape.

The inauguration was led by the Minister of Tourism, Olga Kefalogianni, in the presence of senior officials including the Vice President of the Hellenic Parliament, Giannis Plakiotakis, the Mayor of Agios Nikolaos, Manolis Menegakis, the President of the Municipal Development Company (DAEAN), Giorgos Astroulakis, and the Secretary General for Tourism Policy and Development, Vasiliki Koutsoukou. The Minister emphasized that strengthening Greece’s maritime tourism footprint is a top national priority, with a focus on upgrading infrastructure and services for visitors arriving by sea. This approach aims to enrich the country’s tourism offering, enhance competitiveness and ensure the long-term quality and sustainability of Greek destinations.

The Agios Nikolaos Marina upgrade, with a budget of €2 million financed through the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF), is a representative example of this policy direction. The project includes new floating docks, increased berthing capacity, modern equipment and digital systems, electrification infrastructure, renewable energy installations and accessibility improvements for people with disabilities. These enhancements elevate the marina to contemporary international standards, supporting the needs of the yachting sector and reinforcing Crete’s role as a premium maritime destination.

Minister Kefalogianni noted that Agios Nikolaos now possesses an upgraded asset that strengthens its tourism identity, creates new prospects for the local economy and consolidates its position within Mediterranean maritime tourism. The marina’s improved infrastructure is expected to attract higher-value visitors, extend the tourism season and support local businesses connected to the yachting ecosystem. The project also highlights the importance of coordinated governance.

The Minister praised the collaboration between national authorities, local government and tourism stakeholders, stating that such partnerships create stronger and more competitive destinations. The upgraded Agios Nikolaos Marina is not merely a technical intervention; it is a strategic investment that aligns local development with Greece’s broader maritime tourism agenda, at a time when quality, safety, digital transformation, sustainability and accessibility define the future of the sector.
