Crete’s Beaches Rank Among World’s Best

[49s read]

Crete’s Elafonisi and Balos have secured top global distinctions for a second consecutive year, reinforcing the island’s status as one of the world’s most celebrated natural destinations. In the Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards – Best of the Best Beaches 2026, Elafonisi ranked 2nd worldwide and 1st in Europe, while Balos placed 3rd globally, extending the momentum created by Elafonisi’s #1 global ranking in 2025.

The international acclaim strengthens Greece’s global tourism profile — but it also intensifies the responsibility to safeguard the fragile ecosystems that underpin this recognition. Both beaches are part of the Natura 2000 network, hosting sensitive dune systems, cedar forests and unique coastal habitats increasingly pressured by rising visitor numbers.

Local authorities in the municipalities of Kantanos‑Selino and Kissamos have implemented significant protective measures over the past three years. Umbrella concessions at Elafonisi were reduced from 1,000 to just 200, and vehicle access to the core protection zone has been fully prohibited, supported by 24‑hour monitoring funded entirely by municipal resources. Additional interventions include upgraded fencing to protect dunes and cedar clusters, new informational signage, expanded recycling infrastructure and daily maintenance operations.

Municipal leaders have also pursued institutional and legal actions to defend the area’s conservation status, including safeguarding its forest designation and securing an expanded protection zone during national environmental planning procedures.
