The Samaria National Park enters full operational mode as of Tuesday, 19 May 2026, traditionally serving as one of the strongest catalysts for Crete’s tourism industry and regional development. The iconic gorge opens its gates in its entirety from both entrances, marking the beginning of a season of high expectations for local businesses, hospitality stakeholders, and the wider ecosystem of alternative tourism on the island.

The Mayor of Sfakia, Ioannis Zervos, expressed his satisfaction with the opening of the Samaria Gorge, emphasizing the importance of ensuring its safe operation and the safety of visitors. He specifically stated: “We are satisfied with our cooperation with OFYPEKA. We fully understand any objections or complaints regarding how quickly the entrances of the Gorge should open for visitors, but for us the top priority is the safety of every person who arrives in our region and explores its corners. People come before business activity, and this requires no great effort to be understood by the people of Sfakia, who have consistently demonstrated their respect for integrity and for the essential principles that must accompany hospitality.”

This year’s reopening is accompanied by the official certification of operational readiness by the Organization for Natural Environment and Climate Change (OFYPEKA). The organization successfully completed an extensive annual maintenance program, focusing on reinforcing safety infrastructure, upgrading the main trail, and modernizing communication networks. These interventions are considered strategically important for managing increased visitor flows while safeguarding the destination’s international credibility.

For the business community of Chania and southern Crete, the full availability of the Park translates into an immediate boost in liquidity. The Samaria National Park is a key attraction for high‑income visitors who directly support the sectors of dining, transportation, and local products.

Market analysts highlight that the timely and well‑executed operation of the gorge strengthens Crete’s brand name during a period of intense international competition. The effective management of this unique natural asset is not merely a matter of environmental protection but a proven economic strategy with a direct and positive impact on the GDP of the Region of Crete.
