EUIPO Cancels “Turkaegean” Trademark

[36‑second read]

The EUIPO Board of Appeal has rejected Turkey’s second appeal and confirmed the definitive removal of the “Turkaegean” trademark from the EU register. The case dates back to 2021, when the Turkish Tourism Promotion and Development Agency filed for trademark registration, prompting Greece’s Industrial Property Organisation (OBI) to initiate cancellation procedures in 2022 and submit a formal request in 2023.

The first cancellation decision was issued in January 2025, followed by a Turkish appeal that has now been dismissed. The ruling confirms that the term “Turkaegean” does not meet the criteria for commercial use within the European Union and brings the legal process to a close.

In his statement, Minister of Development Takis Theodorikakos described the decision as a validation of Greece’s position, noting that the outcome reflects systematic legal documentation and coordinated action with OBI. He added that the ruling safeguards the commercial and geographical identity of the Aegean and reaffirms the integrity of the EU’s institutional framework.
