Geogenesis Turns a Cretan Fortress Into a Contemporary Art Space

In the remote landscape of Sfakia, where the mountains descend sharply toward the Libyan Sea, the medieval fortress of Fragokastello has opened its gates to contemporary art. The second edition of the visual arts exhibition GEOGENESIS – The Experience of Nature brings together a wide constellation of painters, sculptors, photographers and mixed media artists, transforming one of Crete’s most storied monuments into a living cultural space. The exhibition is curated by visual artist Stavros Panayiotakis, a native of the region whose work often explores the intersection of nature, memory and materiality.
Running through 20 September 2026, GEOGENESIS is organized by the Municipality of Sfakia, the Regional Unit of Chania and the Ephorate of Antiquities of Chania. The show features works by 31 established and emerging artists, including faculty, graduates and students from Fine Arts Schools across Greece and abroad. Paintings, sculptures, installations, video works and photographic series unfold across the stone interior of the fortress, inviting visitors to experience the exhibition as a spatial journey rather than a linear viewing of artworks.
For the Municipality of Sfakia, the exhibition is part of a broader cultural strategy to decentralize artistic activity and activate historic sites as public cultural spaces. Local officials emphasize that Fragokastello—long associated with legends, battles and collective memory—offers a unique setting where contemporary artistic expression can converse with the raw, untamed nature of the region.
The Regional Unit of Chania highlights the significance of transforming a monument charged with history into a dynamic cultural nucleus. GEOGENESIS, they note, succeeds in bridging contemporary artistic practices with the elemental landscape of Sfakia, offering residents and visitors a deep, high quality cultural experience.
Panayiotakis, who studied at the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK) and holds a doctorate from the School of Architecture at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, brings a curatorial approach rooted in material exploration and conceptual layering. His selection and arrangement of works encourage viewers to navigate the exhibition as a field of ideas, textures and events—an encounter with nature not as scenery, but as experience.
GEOGENESIS positions Fragokastello as a cultural landmark where heritage and contemporary creation meet. In a region known for its rugged beauty and powerful narratives, the exhibition offers an artistic lens through which nature becomes both subject and medium, inviting international audiences to discover a lesser known but profoundly resonant corner of Crete’s cultural landscape.
