Asterousia, Crete’s sole UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, once again emerges as a focal point in the international dialogue on climate resilience, education and sustainable development. With Phase A of the Hybrid University of Asterousia 2026–2027 taking place from 4 to 8 October 2026, the region welcomes participants from ten countries, reaffirming its role as a living laboratory of knowledge and a testing ground for innovative practices across Mediterranean communities.

This year’s theme, “ClimateResilient Communities in Mediterranean Biosphere Reserves,” explores how local societies can strengthen adaptive capacity, reinforce social cohesion and leverage cultural identity as a strategic asset in the face of climate change. Environmental and Sustainability Education (ESE), approached not as a classroombound process but as lifelong learning that extends into productive sectors, professionals, youth and community stakeholders, forms a core pillar of the program.

The initiative is funded by the Regional Development Program of the Region of Crete, supporting the broader effort to position Asterousia as an international meeting point for scientists, educators, civil protection experts and young people seeking practical solutions to the challenges of the climate crisis.

The official launch of the educational activities will take place on Monday, 5 October 2026, at 09:00, at the Old Primary School of Kapetaniana, a venue symbolizing the historical continuity of learning in the area. The event will offer Greek–English interpretation, ensuring full accessibility for the international audience.

Asterousia, with its distinctive geological landscape, spiritual heritage and longstanding relationship with human settlement, provides an ideal setting for exploring resilience. Often described as “the sacred mountain of Crete,” the region combines natural beauty, cultural depth and a dynamic social ecosystem that continues to evolve.

The Hybrid University of Asterousia is not merely an educational initiative. It is a Mediterranean cooperation platform, where scientific expertise meets local knowledge, civil protection intersects with community engagement, and international experience connects with the lived realities of communities facing the impacts of climate change.

Through this year’s program, Asterousia strengthens its position as a global reference point for resilience, education and sustainable development, demonstrating that Crete can play a leading role in shaping the future of Mediterranean societies.
