Restoration Tender for the Venetian Arsenals Moves Forward
[1m read]
The restoration and reuse of one of Crete’s most emblematic heritage sites is entering its next phase. The tender procedure for the project “Restoration, enhancement and functional reuse of the seven Venetian Arsenals (Neoria) in the Old Town of Chania” is now moving forward, following the approval of the tender specifications by the Municipal Committee of Chania. The project carries a budget exceeding €20.7 million, marking a significant step toward the preservation and revitalization of a landmark with deep architectural and maritime significance.
The Venetian Arsenals, built in the 16th century as shipbuilding and repair facilities, form one of the most recognizable historical ensembles in the Eastern Mediterranean. Their restoration aims to safeguard the structural integrity of the monument, highlight its cultural value and integrate it into contemporary urban life through new functional uses. The project includes interventions for conservation, stabilization and architectural enhancement, alongside the creation of spaces suitable for cultural, educational and community-oriented activities.
With the approval of the tender terms, the process now advances to the public procurement stage, during which contractors will submit proposals and a final contractor will be selected. This phase is essential for transitioning the project from planning to implementation, ensuring that the restoration follows established technical, archaeological and architectural standards.
Once completed, the restored Arsenals are expected to contribute to the cultural infrastructure of Chania, support local economic activity and strengthen the city’s position as a destination where heritage and contemporary urban development coexist. The project represents a coordinated effort to preserve a historic monument while enabling its sustainable use for future generations.
