Shepherd’s Festival in Kritsa: Crete Honors Its Living Heritage

In the heart of Crete, the village of Kritsa will host the Shepherd’s Festival on 16 August 2026, celebrating the island’s pastoral tradition and the people who sustain its mountainous economy. Organized by the Livestock Association of Lasithi Prefecture, the event pays tribute to the shepherds whose work continues to define the rhythm of rural life and the authenticity of Cretan culture.

For centuries, livestock farming has been a cornerstone of Crete’s identity — shaping its landscapes, supporting local communities, and preserving a way of life that blends endurance with craftsmanship. The evening program features performances by Nikomanolis Nykasris and Kostis Vlasis, alongside traditional dishes such as boiled lamb, wedding pilaf and antikristo, all emblematic of Crete’s pastoral cuisine. The event will take place in the courtyard of the Kritsa Elementary School, starting at 21:00, with a full menu priced at €20.
