
White Mountains Speleological Mission Positions Sfakia as a European Scientific Frontier

A multinational team of forty speleologists and researchers from eight countries across Europe and the United States completed its tenth consecutive annual expedition in the White Mountains of Crete, advancing one of the most significant speleological research projects currently underway in Europe. The mission focuses on the exploration and mapping of the Sterna caveshaft system in the Sfakia region, a subterranean formation extending 12,300 meters — the second longest known cave system in Greece — located above the village of Anopoli at an altitude of 2,090 meters.
The Mayor of Sfakia, Ioannis Zervos, visited the research team on September 12, 1926, delivering essential supplies and receiving a detailed briefing on the progress of the expedition. The mission’s longterm continuity and expanding scientific output underscore the growing importance of the White Mountains as a field site for advanced geological, hydrological and biospeleological research. Each year, the team reaches deeper sections of the cave system, documenting new geological structures, hydrological pathways and biological specimens, while employing modern digital mapping technologies and collecting samples for specialized laboratory analysis in Greece and abroad.
The 2026 expedition was supported through a €10,000 grant from the Hellenic Organization for Natural Environment and Climate Change (OFYPEKA), secured through the Mayor’s intervention, with additional logistical assistance provided by the Municipality of Sfakia. According to Mayor Zervos, the mission contributes critical knowledge about the geological evolution, underground water systems and ecological dynamics of the White Mountains, reinforcing the scientific value of the region and its role in broader environmental research.
Beyond its scientific significance, the international presence of researchers in Sfakia enhances the region’s visibility and supports the development of specialized forms of alternative tourism linked to exploration, nature and scientific discovery. The White Mountains — already known for their dramatic landscapes and cultural heritage — are increasingly emerging as a destination of interest for research institutions, universities and scientific organizations seeking unique field environments.
The Sterna caveshaft mission demonstrates how longterm scientific exploration can evolve into a strategic asset for regional development. Through sustained support, international collaboration and continuous production of new knowledge, Sfakia is positioning itself not only as a site of natural beauty but as a growing hub for scientific activity in the Eastern Mediterranean.
