From 18 to 21 May 2026, Chania transformed into a meeting point for the Mediterranean outdoors, sustainable development and contemporary tourism strategy. The Mediterranean Trails Network (MTN) chose Crete for its 5th official gathering, bringing together trail builders, hiking‑tourism specialists and sustainable‑development organisations from France, Palestine, Turkey, Greece and Lebanon. The choice of Chania was no coincidence; the city has become one of the Mediterranean’s most dynamic hubs for initiatives that connect natural landscapes with cultural heritage and high‑quality tourism.

The meeting unfolded as a multi‑layered journey through the nature and history of Crete. Participants walked the Trails of Chania and Apokoronas, explored the archaeological site of Aptera and the new Archaeological Museum of Chania, and experienced the richness of the Cretan diet through encounters that highlighted the authenticity and depth of local gastronomy. Crete functioned as a living laboratory where the island’s identity meets the need for modern, sustainable tourism models.

At the heart of the event was the MTN’s 1st General Assembly, successfully held with 24 participants joining both online and in person. Representatives from all three Mediterranean shores took part in a process that confirmed the network’s maturity and the expansion of its institutional presence. The Assembly marked a turning point for MTN, establishing for the first time a shared framework for strategic priorities, member needs and future development.

Throughout the sessions, a substantial exchange of best practices took place with Greek stakeholders active in hiking, trail management and sustainable tourism. Crete became a convergence point where expertise from different countries met local realities and the prospects of the Greek countryside. At the same time, MTN proudly announced that the network now includes 17 official members across 9 countries, reinforcing its momentum as a Mediterranean institution evolving with steady pace.

The discussion on the network’s future strategy opened the way for new models of engagement, collaboration and financial sustainability. Participants worked on ideas aimed at strengthening MTN in the long term, with emphasis on stable funding mechanisms, community empowerment and the promotion of the Mediterranean as a unified space of culture, nature and sustainable experience.

Crete, with its strong identity and its ability to bridge tradition and modernity, proved to be the ideal setting for a meeting that went beyond formal procedures and highlighted the essence of cooperation. MTN left Chania with reinforced cohesion, an expanded network and a clear strategic direction. And Crete, once again, demonstrated its capacity to host international initiatives that connect development with respect for the environment and cultural heritage.
