The REGIOSTARS Awards, established in 2008 by the European Commission’s DG REGIO, return in 2026 as one of Europe’s most prestigious recognitions for regional development. Over the years, the awards have evolved into a hallmark of excellence, highlighting projects funded by the European Union that deliver measurable impact, foster inclusion and strengthen territorial cohesion. Today, REGIOSTARS stands as a benchmark for innovation across European regions, showcasing initiatives that redefine how local communities grow, adapt and thrive.
The 2026 edition focuses on five core priorities of EU regional policy, reflecting Europe’s strategic direction in sustainability, connectivity, digital transformation, social inclusion and resilient development. As in previous years, the awards invite public participation through the People’s Choice vote, which opens on 3 September and closes at noon on 14 October. The winners in each category, along with the People’s Choice Award, will be announced during the official REGIOSTARS ceremony on the evening of 14 October, marking the conclusion of the European Week of Regions and Cities.
This year, Greece is represented by two projects of strategic significance, each demonstrating how regional investments can shape Europe’s future. Among them, Crete holds a prominent place. In the category “A Green Europe,” the Crete–Attica Electrical Interconnection stands as a flagship project that embodies the continent’s green transition. The interconnection ends Crete’s long-standing energy isolation by linking the island to the mainland grid through an advanced subsea cable. This major infrastructure investment replaces oil-based electricity generation with clean energy, reduces emissions, strengthens supply security and unlocks Crete’s considerable renewable energy potential. With its unique geographic and climatic profile, Crete becomes a central pillar of Greece’s climate-neutral future and a model of regional transformation aligned with EU sustainability goals.
Greece’s second nomination appears in the category “A Connected Europe,” with the Alexandroupolis Independent Natural Gas System. The project introduces a new energy gateway for Southeastern and Central Europe through a state-of-the-art Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) and an integrated transmission network. By diversifying energy sources and routes, the system enhances regional resilience and supports a more competitive and secure European energy market. The dual Greek presence in the REGIOSTARS shortlist underscores the country’s growing role in Europe’s evolving energy architecture.
Crete’s participation in REGIOSTARS 2026 carries particular weight. The island emerges as a region that effectively leverages EU funding to reshape its energy landscape, strengthen territorial cohesion and promote a development model that connects technological progress with local identity.
