On Friday, 24 July 2026, the Heraklion Hotels Association held an informative meeting at the ALBATROS SPA RESORT HOTEL in Hersonissos, focusing on strengthening cooperation between the hotel sector and the producers of the Lassithi Plateau Agricultural Cooperative. The initiative forms part of the Association’s broader strategy to reinforce the connection between Crete’s primary production and its tourism industry—an approach that now gains institutional momentum through the newly established Thematic Deputy Regional Authority for the Integration of Primary Production with Tourism.

The meeting was organized within the framework of the Association’s actions to support agricultural and livestock production in the Lassithi Plateau, as well as its participation in the project “Crete – European Region of Gastronomy 2026.” The Heraklion Hotels Association has taken an active role in identifying new pathways of collaboration between hospitality businesses and local producers, promoting a sustainable development model that strengthens the local economy and highlights Crete’s gastronomic identity.

The Thematic Deputy Regional Governor for the Integration of Primary Production with Tourism, Mr. Spyros Balantinos, participated online and welcomed the initiative, emphasizing that cooperation between these two pillars of the Cretan economy is a strategic priority for the Region. The newly established thematic authority aims to support local production structures and promote a holistic development model that connects the quality of Cretan products with the visitor experience.

The presentation of the Lassithi Plateau Agricultural Cooperative was delivered by its Director, Mr. Manolis Krasanakis, in the presence of local producers. Participants showcased the potential for supplying highquality local products to hotel businesses, including the renowned products of the DIKTI Dairy, highlighting the value of local production and the prospects for stable, longterm partnerships.

Particular interest was drawn by the presentation from the Metaxa Hospitality Group on the program “Regenerative Agriculture for the Lassithi Plateau and Its People – Towards a Sustainable Food Destination.” This initiative stands as a model for connecting tourism with sustainable agriculture and local production, demonstrating the potential for developing a modern and resilient agrifood model for Crete.

Representatives from leading hotel enterprises in the region attended the meeting, including Shotels, Stella Hotels, Metaxa Hospitality Group, K Badouvas Group, Cactus Hotels, Leontarakis Hotels, Lavris Hotels, Golden Hotels, Albatros Spa Resort Hotel and Knossos Beach. Their presence confirmed the strong interest of the hotel sector in integrating local products into their operations and establishing stable collaborations with producers.

The Heraklion Hotels Association was represented by Vice President Ms. Nadia Tamiolaki, who oversaw the organization of the event, and the Association’s Director, Mr. Nikos Fountoulakis. A constructive dialogue developed between producers and hotel representatives, with a shared understanding that enhancing the presence of highquality Cretan products in hotel units creates significant added value for both tourism and primary production.

The Heraklion Hotels Association continues to advance initiatives that strengthen cooperation between hospitality businesses and local producers, contributing to the formation of a sustainable and competitive development model for Crete. The integration of primary production and tourism has now become a strategic direction for the Region, and the Association is emerging as a key actor in implementing this new development vision.

The 6th Pan-Cretan Tourism Conference: A Growing Annual Reference Point

Within this ongoing effort, the 6th PanCretan Tourism Conference titled “Authentic Hospitality Experience” is eagerly anticipated. The conference will take place on Saturday, 24 October 2026, at the Lassithi Plateau, organized by Kriton Epicheirein following an invitation from the Municipality of Lassithi Plateau, in collaboration with the Municipality and PODIX. Over the years, the conference has evolved into an annual reference point for Crete’s tourism sector and its connection with local production.

Its focus on authentic hospitality is expected to highlight new opportunities for integrating local products, Cretan gastronomy and agricultural production into the tourism offering, further strengthening Crete’s vision for a development model rooted in quality, identity and sustainability.
