Olga Kefalogianni’s Visit to Salzburg Strengthens Tourism Ties

Greek Minister of Tourism Olga Kefalogianni visited Salzburg following an official invitation from Austria’s Deputy Minister for Energy, Start ups and Tourism, Elisabeth Zehetner. The meeting took place alongside the bilateral consultations between Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker, underscoring the strategic character of the discussions.
Talks focused on tourism education and training, as well as the growing importance of mountain tourism as a pillar of sustainable development. Minister Kefalogianni highlighted that mountain tourism can significantly support local communities, safeguard natural and cultural heritage and strengthen climate resilience. Both sides reaffirmed their intention to deepen cooperation through the exchange of expertise and best practices in tourism education, skilled workforce development and modern standards for mountain destinations.
During her visit, the Minister toured the Klessheim Tourism School, one of Europe’s most renowned hospitality institutions. Operating since 1957, the school is considered a benchmark in professional tourism education, combining theoretical training, practical experience and strong links with the labor market.
She also met with representatives of Austria’s Public Employment Service (AMS), discussing workforce mobility in tourism and opportunities for further collaboration at the European level.
The visit concluded in Saalfelden–Leogang, one of Austria’s leading mountain destinations. The Minister was briefed on the destination’s development model, which is built on sustainability, local identity and the creation of a comprehensive four season tourism product.Kefalogianni’s visit to Salzburg confirmed the strategic importance of Greece–Austria cooperation in mountain tourism and tourism education, opening pathways for joint initiatives that enhance quality, sustainability and competitiveness across both countries.
