Crete Leads Greece in 2026 Tourism Arrivals

Crete emerges once again as Greece’s strongest performer in international air arrivals, according to INSETE’s August 2026 Tourism Statistics Report. With 3.2 million visitors between January and July and a year‑on‑year increase of +7.2%, the island reinforces its position as a leading Mediterranean destination and a core driver of regional tourism growth. The report highlights solid nationwide performance in both arrivals and travel receipts, underscoring the resilience and competitiveness of Greece’s tourism sector.
INSETE’s August 2026 Tourism Statistics Report presents a broadly positive picture for inbound tourism in Greece, with international air arrivals reaching 15.7 million during the January–July period. This represents an increase of 541 thousand visitors or +3.6% compared with the same period in 2025, confirming sustained demand for Greek destinations. The third quarter also began on an upward trajectory, as July recorded 5.0 million international arrivals, up by 155 thousand or +3.2% year‑on‑year.
At Athens International Airport, international arrivals reached 4.9 million, marking a slight decline of 42 thousand or -0.8%. Thessaloniki Airport followed with 1.6 million arrivals, an increase of 91 thousand or +6.0%.
Across all regional units, international arrivals moved upward, with Crete achieving the highest performance nationwide. The island recorded 3.2 million arrivals, an increase of 217 thousand or +7.2% compared with 2025. The Dodecanese followed with 2.5 million arrivals (+2.4%), the Ionian Islands with 2.3 million (+6.6%), the Cyclades with 668 thousand (+4.7%), and the Peloponnese with 154 thousand arrivals, marking a notable increase of +15.2%.
Travel receipts also showed strong momentum. During January–June 2026, receipts reached €8,796 million, up by +14.8% compared with the same period in 2025. This growth was driven by both EU markets and non‑EU markets. Receipts from EU residents increased by +10.7% to €4,526 million, while receipts from residents of non‑EU countries rose by +19.7% to €3,860 million.
More specifically, receipts from euro‑area residents reached €3,778 million, up by +13.3%. In contrast, receipts from EU residents outside the euro area declined by -1.1% to €749 million. Among major markets, Germany and France recorded decreases, with receipts falling to €1,276 million (-6.3%) and €414 million (-7.4%) respectively. Italy, however, posted a significant increase of +31.1%, reaching €470 million. From non‑EU markets, the United Kingdom recorded an increase of +8.5% with receipts of €1,179 million, while the United States saw receipts rise by +10.8% to €797 million.
INSETE’s August 2026 report confirms that Greece continues to attract strong tourism demand, supported by robust regional performance and substantial economic contribution. Crete, the Dodecanese and the Ionian Islands maintain their leading roles, while the rise in travel receipts reinforces the sector’s resilience amid global volatility. The data indicate that Greece remains on a growth trajectory, with positive prospects for the remainder of the year.
