Sitia Launches a Global Diaspora Initiative

[1m 51s read]

Sitia has taken a decisive step toward strengthening its ties with people who live far from their place of origin, with the first official gathering of Sitia’s diaspora community held in the Municipal Council Hall. The meeting marked the beginning of a new, open and participatory initiative that aims to evolve into a permanent channel of communication, cooperation and consultation between the Municipality of Sitia and Sitians across Greece and around the world.

The initiative, which aspires to form the “Committee of Sitia Diaspora,” is addressed to all individuals who maintain strong bonds with Sitia, whether they reside in Greece or abroad, as well as to diaspora associations, cultural unions and Greek communities internationally. Its core ambition is to transform the relationship between Sitia and its diaspora from a sentiment of nostalgia into a dynamic, active and creative partnership that leverages knowledge, experience and professional capacity for the benefit of the region.

During the opening of the meeting, the Mayor of Sitia welcomed participants and emphasized the enduring emotional and cultural connection that diaspora Sitians maintain with their homeland. He noted that some left many years ago, others were born far away, and many built families and new lives at a distance from the place they still consider home. Despite these different paths, he highlighted that all share a common element: carrying Sitia within them. He stressed the need to establish a modern and meaningful relationship between Sitia and its people across the world, pointing out that diaspora members can serve as the region’s most effective ambassadors, promoting its image, potential and opportunities in the societies where they live and work.

The initiative aims to map and connect Sitia’s diaspora, establish a structured communication network with associations and Greek communities, preserve and promote the history, traditions and cultural identity of Sitia, and strengthen the relationship of younger generations with their roots. It also seeks to foster collaborations among professionals, scientists and entrepreneurs, utilize the diaspora’s knowledge and experience, enhance Sitia’s visibility as a tourism and investment destination, support volunteer and social actions, and provide informed proposals to the Municipality on issues concerning diaspora engagement and regional development.

The Committee of Sitia Diaspora will operate informally, voluntarily and without profit-making objectives. It does not constitute an independent legal entity and does not replace the institutional bodies of the Municipality. Instead, it aims to complement them by creating a stable space for dialogue and exchange of views. The initiative is open to everyone, without political or partisan references, guided by principles of equal participation, cooperation, transparency, respect for diverse perspectives and, above all, genuine love for the region.

The first informal sevenmember committee consists of Mayor Giorgos Zervakis, Giannis Daourakis, Giorgos Galanakis, Giorgos Angelakis, Katerina Mazonaki, Giorgos Triantafyllidis and Anna Logaki.

Sitia’s new diaspora initiative reflects a broader shift toward inclusive regional development, civic participation and cultural continuity. By activating its global network of people, the region seeks not only to preserve its identity but also to unlock new opportunities for collaboration, innovation and international presence.
