Sfakia Supports International Speleological Mission “STERNES 2026”

A decisive step in supporting scientific research and highlighting the unique geological wealth of the White Mountains was taken with the approval of a €10,000 sponsorship by the Board of the Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency (OFYPEKA). The funding, directed to the Speleological Club of Crete and the international speleological mission “STERNES 2026,” follows the personal intervention of the Mayor of Sfakia, Ioannis Zervos, who has consistently supported the team’s work and its annual expeditions.

The sponsorship strengthens the activities of the Speleological Club of Crete and contributes directly to the implementation of “STERNES 2026,” an international mission dedicated to advancing research that benefits the scientific community and enhances understanding of the subterranean ecosystem of the White Mountains. This year’s mission, taking place from 29 August to 13 September, will bring together more than forty speleologists from eight countries across Europe and the United States, underscoring the global reach and scientific significance of the initiative.

Mayor Ioannis Zervos emphasized that the contribution of OFYPEKA and its CEO, Konstantinos Triantis, is crucial for the mission’s progress. He noted that the Municipality of Sfakia will once again stand firmly beside the large team of speleologists, providing extensive logistical support throughout the twoweek expedition. The municipality will organize at least ten transport operations using 4×4 vehicles from Sfakia and Anopoli to the STERNES site, while also assisting with the procurement of food supplies and essential materials from local businesses.

The cave system at STERNES in the White Mountains is one of Greece’s most remarkable geological formations, extending more than 10,500 meters in length and reaching a depth of 722 meters. It is ranked as the country’s fourth deepest and second longest cave, making it a point of reference for the international speleological community. The mission also includes a team of geologists from universities in Greece and the United Arab Emirates, participating within a UNESCOfunded research program focused on the formation and evolution of the White Mountains.

The support provided by the Municipality of Sfakia has been described as decisive for the success of the mission, given the demanding terrain and the need for specialized access and continuous operational assistance. The Speleological Club of Crete and the international team highlight the municipality as one of the primary contributors to the expedition, acknowledging its role in all outreach and publicity efforts both within and beyond Greece.

Mayor Zervos stressed that supporting this major international mission is not merely an obligation but a strategic choice for the region. He noted that the White Mountains conceal an invaluable geological and environmental treasure, and through the work of “STERNES 2026,” Sfakia is placed firmly at the center of global scientific interest. The mission’s impact is multidimensional, enhancing scientific knowledge of underground water systems and the local ecosystem, promoting highquality alternative tourism, and showcasing the authentic hospitality and identity of Sfakia on an international stage. He added that the municipality is proud to welcome and support these tireless explorers each year, offering every possible facilitation to ensure the success of their work.

With the continued support of the Municipality of Sfakia and the sponsorship of OFYPEKA, “STERNES 2026” is expected to mark another significant milestone in the scientific exploration of the White Mountains and in strengthening Sfakia’s international scientific presence.
