UCD Summit Charts New Cultural Agenda

The 2nd Summit of the Unified Cultural Doctrine (UCD) of Cyprus, Greece and the Global Hellenic Diaspora concluded with a clear strategic direction: the establishment of an Intergenerational Cultural Festival designed to engage younger generations in a creative re approach to Hellenic cultural heritage and to strengthen a shared national and cultural identity across the worldwide Greek community.
Held at Lake Plastira, the Summit brought together fifty delegates from Cyprus, Greece, Southern Italy and Northern Epirus, representing twenty four cultural organizations that form the UCD. Additional cultural and academic institutions attended as observers, expressing interest in joining the initiative.
Delegates emphasized that the next phase of cultural policy requires structured intergenerational participation, systematic documentation of intangible and tangible heritage, and coordinated action to safeguard linguistic and cultural continuity. The Summit confirmed the launch of the festival titled “Bridges of Culture, Tradition and Contemporary Creation”, a platform intended to connect youth with heritage through modern creative expression and collaborative cultural programming.
The UCD’s committees will begin a comprehensive mapping of local cultural assets, aiming to preserve, document and elevate traditions, practices and material heritage across all participating regions. Delegates reaffirmed that the Greek language remains the strongest unifying element of the global Hellenic community, forming the core of the UCD’s mission. A structured policy will be implemented to promote Greek language education internationally, while initiatives will support the protection of Greek dialects within diaspora communities.
The Summit also adopted a resolution condemning the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus and the ongoing illegal occupation of part of the island. Delegates stressed the importance of safeguarding historical memory, highlighting the screening of journalist Nikos Aslanidis’ documentary “Where Are They”, which examines the fate of Cyprus’ missing persons.
A key milestone for the UCD will be the 3rd Summit, scheduled for 30 October – 1 November 2026, to be hosted in Chania, Crete, by the Orthodox Academy of Crete (OAC) — a founding member of the UCD and one of Greece’s most respected institutions for intercultural dialogue, academic reflection and cultural diplomacy. The selection of the OAC underscores its international role as a bridge between tradition and contemporary thought, providing an ideal environment for advancing the UCD’s strategic agenda.
Delegates expressed their appreciation to the Mayor of Lake Plastira, Panagiotis Nanos, and the municipality for their hospitality and support. The Summit concluded with a shared commitment to shaping a modern cultural framework that connects generations, strengthens identity and ensures continuity — a mission that the UCD and the Orthodox Academy of Crete are poised to lead into the next phase.
