Sitia’s European Presence

The Municipality of Sitia strengthened its European presence through its participation in CIVITAS Forum 2026, one of Europe’s leading conferences dedicated to sustainable mobility and urban climate resilience. The event took place in Thessaloniki and brought together more than 700 delegates from across Europe, including representatives of Regions, local authorities, professionals and organisations active in the fields of transport innovation, environmental planning and urban development.
Sitia was represented by Mr. Ioannis Kalyvas, project officer of the Horizon Europe – Regions4Climate (R4C) initiative, who conveyed the municipality’s priorities and ongoing work on climate adaptation and sustainable urban planning. The participation offered a valuable opportunity for knowledge exchange, presentation of good practices and the development of new European partnerships focused on mobility, innovation and the transition of cities towards climate‑resilient futures.
Throughout the Forum’s sessions and bilateral meetings, modern solutions and practical approaches were highlighted for creating safer, more sustainable and more resilient cities. Sitia engaged in discussions on strengthening sustainable mobility, adopting innovative tools and supporting local communities in adapting to the impacts of climate change — reaffirming its commitment to European cooperation and evidence‑based policy design.
The expertise and good practices gained during the conference will be integrated into the ongoing work of Regions4Climate, as well as into the internal planning processes of the municipality’s technical and administrative services. These insights will support the design of projects that enhance climate resilience, improve mobility, upgrade infrastructure and contribute to the sustainable development of the wider Sitia region.
Sitia’s presence at CIVITAS Forum 2026 underscores its position on the European map as a municipality investing in innovation, collaboration and a forward‑looking approach to environmental and urban challenges.
