Crete and Greece in Q2 2026: The Digital Reputation Report

[1m 35s read]

Crete continues to stand out as one of Greece’s most recognizable and influential regions in shaping the country’s digital reputation. Despite a slightly lower overall rating compared to other high-performing regions, Crete maintains strong visitor satisfaction levels, driven by its exceptional hospitality, distinctive cultural identity and internationally acknowledged gastronomic heritage. Its designation as the European Region of Gastronomy further strengthened its online visibility, linking the island’s culinary tradition with authenticity, local culture and high-value tourism experiences. Hospitality—deeply embedded in the island’s DNA—remains Crete’s strongest competitive advantage, confirming its role as a destination of consistently high added value.

Across Greece, visitor experience remained exceptionally strong during Q2 2026, with ratings surpassing the European average and outperforming key competitors such as Portugal, Italy and Spain. The stability of these ratings, despite seasonal fluctuations in review volume, highlights the resilience of Greece’s tourism product and the consistency of visitor satisfaction.

INSETE’s analysis, conducted in collaboration with TCI Research, captures Greece’s digital reputation through hundreds of thousands of references across social media and travel platforms. The country’s Net Sentiment Index (NSI) reached 38, placing Greece third among benchmark destinations, behind Croatia and Portugal. Despite environmental pressures and extreme weather events, Greece’s overall digital image remained positive, driven by culture, gastronomy and hospitality.

Culture and gastronomy emerged as the strongest pillars of Greece’s online reputation. Cultural references exceeded 31,000 mentions with an exceptionally high sentiment score of 88, while gastronomy followed with 20,000 mentions and a sentiment score of 81. Hospitality, although less frequently mentioned, recorded a sentiment score of 85, confirming the enduring value of human-centered service. Crete played a central role in this narrative, combining authenticity, local production and sustainable tourism practices—elements that enhance the island’s competitiveness in the international market.

The report highlights that Greece’s cultural heritage and gastronomic identity remain stable drivers of attractiveness. The growing demand for authentic, less commercialized experiences creates new opportunities for Crete’s inland areas and lesser-known communities, where genuine local living and unfiltered everyday culture translate into high-value tourism experiences.

Sustainability and hygiene remain areas requiring further improvement. Environmental pressures and climate-related challenges influence digital sentiment, making investments in sustainable practices and infrastructure increasingly essential. Crete, with its strong natural assets and evolving environmental awareness, is well-positioned to lead the integration of sustainability into tourism planning and operations.

Overall, Q2 2026 positions Greece among Europe’s top-performing destinations, with Crete maintaining its role as a benchmark for authenticity, gastronomy and human-centered hospitality. The country’s digital reputation reflects not just communication trends but the real experience offered to visitors. And Crete—through its culture, its people and its deeply rooted tradition of hospitality—continues to embody the essence of Greece’s tourism identity.
